Robert L. McDowell, Jr., MD, FAAP

Dr. McDowell has practiced Pediatrics and Neonatology in the greater Washington community since the late-1970's. He is a graduate of Harvard College, Harvard Medical School and completed his internship, residency and fellowship in Pediatrics and Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine at Children's National Medical Center (CNMC) in Washington, D.C. Following his training, Dr. McDowell joined the fulltime faculty at CNMC and served as Assistant Director of Nurseries at George Washington University Medical Center and an attending neonatologist at CNMC. Dr. McDowell entered the private practice of Pediatrics and Neonatology in the Washington community in the early-1980's and joined Spring Valley Pediatrics in 2000. He provides comprehensive medical care for children from birth through college age, with special interests in follow-up of the sick newborn, developmental variability, learning disabilities and ADHD.

Board certified in Pediatrics and in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine, Dr. McDowell is a Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at George Washington University Medical School and Clinical Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Georgetown University Medical School.He is consistently voted as one of the “Top Doctors in Washington” by several community publications and is annually recognized by the “Best Doctors in America”. He is currently a member of the Board of Directors of Children's National Medical Center. He is a life fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and a member of the American Medical Association.

Dr. McDowell has been very active in the local independent school community having served on the Governing Boards of Beauvoir, The National Cathedral Elementary School and The Kingsbury School, as well as serving as a medical consultant to National Cathedral School for Girls, The Landon School, and Walt Whitman High School. He is currently Vice President of the Governing Board of Kingsbury.

Dr. McDowell lives in Bethesda with his wife and two children.
